INTRODUCTION CONTENTS HIPPODROME WHAT'S NEW MUSEUM LINKS AWARDS |
On the north side of the Forum of Constantine there stood a Senat House. According to an 11th century description it was a rotunda and had a portico with four big columns. In the first years of the newly rebuilt city, the bronze quadriga driven by Constantine as the Invincible Sun (Sol invictus), which was brought in procession into the hippodrome once a year on the birthday of the city on May 11, was kept here throughout the year. When this ceremony was given up in the late fourth century, the group of statues was dissolved, and only the quadriga with its famous four horses survived in the hippodrome. The Senat House remained unused, but existed probably until the great fire of 1204 when the Forum of Constantine was destroyed.
